Frequently Asked Questions About Large-Scale Solar Energy and Battery Storage

Are you planning a large-scale solar farm, a stand-alone battery storage system, or a combination of PV and BESS? Below you’ll find answers to frequently asked questions about our services, approach, and expertise.

About Aton Projects

Aton Projects designs, supplies, builds, and maintains large-scale solar farms and battery storage systems. We handle the entire EPC process, from engineering and procurement to construction, commissioning, and handover. We also offer Operations & Maintenance services and external medium-voltage projects.

Aton Projects implements large-scale PV and BESS projects in the Netherlands and Germany. Our teams combine local project experience with the expertise and capabilities of an international network.

Yes. Aton Projects is part of Essent and the E.ON Group. This allows us to combine the flexibility and dedication of a specialized project team with strong purchasing power, financial stability, and an international network of suppliers and partners.

Aton Projects has more than fifteen years of experience in large-scale solar energy. We have installed over 800 MWp and approximately 900,000 solar panels for leading developers, energy companies, and investors.

Aton Projects is certified under ISO 9001 for quality management, ISO 14001 for environmental management, and VCA** for safe and responsible work practices. Quality, safety, sustainability, and integrity form the foundation of our projects.

EPC and Project Implementation

EPC stands for Engineering, Procurement, and Construction. This means that a single party is responsible for the design, the procurement of components, and the construction of the facility. Aton Projects coordinates these disciplines as a single integrated process.

In a turnkey project, Aton Projects handles the entire agreed-upon process, right through to an operational installation that is carefully handed over. The client has a single point of contact for engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, and handover.

Our engineers handle the technical development of the project, from system design and structural calculations to electrical infrastructure and grid connection. They remain involved throughout the implementation phase to ensure that design choices align well with practical considerations and project-specific requirements.

Aton Projects focuses on comprehensive EPC solutions, but the exact scope is determined on a project-by-project basis. Depending on the project phase and requirements, we can work with you to determine which components—such as engineering, construction, medium-voltage systems, or O&M—fit within our range of services.

We operate in accordance with established quality and safety processes, applicable technical standards, and project-specific requirements. Our project managers, engineers, and field teams monitor quality at every stage. Our ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and VCA** certifications support this structured approach.

Yes. Based on the available project information, we can assess whether we can provide an initial estimate. For projects in Germany, a cost calculator is available on our website. For other projects, please contact us directly to schedule a no-obligation introductory meeting.

Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)

A Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is a large-scale battery system that temporarily stores electricity and makes it available again at a later time. Battery storage can contribute to greater flexibility, better utilization of renewable energy, and a more stable power grid.

Yes. Aton Projects designs, supplies, and builds large-scale stand-alone BESS installations. We handle the entire process, from engineering and procurement to construction, system integration, commissioning, and handover.

Yes. A BESS can be implemented as a standalone system or combined with a solar farm. In a co-location setup, solar energy and battery storage are integrated into a single energy solution. The technical configuration is tailored to the project’s objectives, location, and grid connection.

Depending on the project design, a BESS can be used for applications such as peak shaving, congestion management, frequency control, and more efficient utilization of the grid connection. The appropriate application and configuration depend on the business case, grid conditions, and technical requirements.

We’ll start with the project objectives and technical requirements. Next, we assess factors such as the desired power output and storage capacity, the usage profile, the location, grid connection, safety requirements, system integration, and future management needs. Based on this, we develop a suitable solution.

Grid Connection and Medium Voltage

Aton Projects can handle complete external medium-voltage systems all the way to the grid operator’s connection point. This includes engineering, installation, testing, and commissioning within the agreed-upon project scope.

We design and construct medium-voltage and fiber-optic routes over long distances, including complex crossings with, for example, roads, waterways, rail lines, and existing cable and pipeline infrastructure. Construction is carried out in accordance with the grid operator’s regulations and applicable standards and safety guidelines.

Grid congestion always requires a project-specific assessment. We can assist with the technical integration of PV and BESS and with the efficient utilization of the available grid connection. Feasibility continues to depend on factors such as grid conditions, permits, the business case, and agreements with the grid operator.

Operations & Maintenance

Our Operations & Maintenance services are designed to ensure a safe, reliable, and high-performing facility. Depending on the agreement, these services include monitoring, preventive and corrective maintenance, inspections, troubleshooting, and performance optimization.

Yes. Our O&M services are available for both installations completed by Aton Projects and PV and battery storage systems built by third parties. We assess the technical condition, documentation, and desired services in advance.

We use monitoring software to continuously monitor installations. This allows us to identify and investigate anomalies early on, thereby minimizing downtime and loss of revenue as much as possible. The specific monitoring and reporting arrangements are set forth in the O&M agreement.

Yes. Professional drones can be used for visual inspections and thermographic analyses. This allows for the efficient detection of defects, temperature anomalies, and contamination, even in large installations.

Working with Aton Projects

We work with project developers, energy companies, investors, asset owners, and other professional parties that develop, implement, or manage large-scale PV or BESS projects, among others.

The sooner the technical parameters are clear, the better we can contribute ideas regarding design, feasibility, procurement, planning, grid connection, and management. Even for projects that are further along in development, we’re happy to assess what contribution we can make within the desired scope.

For an initial assessment, we prefer to receive information about the location, intended capacity, project phase, permits, schedule, grid connection, and desired EPC scope. For BESS, the desired power output, storage capacity, and intended application are also relevant.

Please contact us via the contact form on our website or send an email to sales@aton-projects.com to schedule a no-obligation introductory meeting. Briefly describe the location, project phase, intended capacity, and desired services. Our team will then contact you to discuss the possibilities.
