PV & BESS in Former Mines, Germany – RWE

Solar energy from former mines
Commissioned by RWE, Aton Projects realized three groundbreaking solar parks on the sites of the former lignite mines Inden, Garzweiler, and Jackerath.
Together accounting for over 45 MWp capacity and more than 81,000 solar panels, these installations provide sustainable electricity for thousands of households.

The ground conditions in the former mines were very challenging, and by designing and applying innovative foundation methods, Aton Projects was able to make a significant difference in the construction of these projects.

In addition, Aton Projects built an advanced BESS system at all three locations. The BESS systems are directly connected to the PV installations via a DC-DC connection. This resulted in a total storage capacity of no less than 40,624 kWh. This enables RWE, in addition to supplying sustainable energy, to contribute to stabilizing the German energy grid.
